This program showcases a 24-minute Buddhist Sci-Fi video by artist, director and Grammy Award nominee Andrew Thomas Huang: “The Deer of Nine Colors,” commissioned by the Thailand Biennale, screened at LACMA last spring, and headed for the Southbank Centre. The screening will be presented with a conversation between Huang and Susie Ferrell, Wynn Resorts Associate Curator of Chinese Art at LACMA, and creative experiments led by media artist Vivian Lin, inviting special guests including artists Leone Contini, Kyoko Takenaka, and participants to poetically engage with Su Xiaobai’s Alchemical Universe.
Biographies:
Andrew Thomas Huang
Artist and filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang explores themes of queer futurism, Asian mythology, folklore, animism, ancestry and body memory. His films have been commissioned by and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, The Sydney Opera House, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA. He has also received film and sculpture commissions from the Thailand and Sydney Biennales. Most recently Huang launched his first solo exhibition at LACMA, The Deer of Nine Colors, a Buddhist sci-fi triptych film installation.
A Grammy-nominated music video director, Huang's collaborators include Bjork, FKA Twigs, Eartheater, Perfume Genius and Thom Yorke among others. As a creative director, Huang has led Bjork's pioneering traveling VR exhibition Bjork Digital as well as exhibitions for MUNCH Museum in Oslo, Norway. Huang continues to weave fine art, technology and storytelling across various media, including opera, immersive XR experiences and live performance.
As a film director, Huang is in preparation for his first feature film TIGER GIRL which has received support from Cinereach, Film Independent, SFFILM and the Sundance Institute. Huang graduated with a degree in Fine Art and Animation from the University of Southern California.
Vivian Wenli Lin, Ph.D. /林雯莉
Vivian Wenli Lin is a media artist and educator with a background in psychology, documentary film, video art, and interactive installation. Her research interests focus on issues of representation, gender, migration and the Asian diaspora.
Lin has been conducting participatory media workshops since 2004, with extensive experience in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. She is the co-founder of Voices of Women Media, an organization that utilizes visual participatory methods to facilitate communities of migrant women and allies in media literacy and authoring their own narratives. Lin’s work is grounded in partnerships and includes collaborations with educational, arts and community organizations.
Lin received her Ph.D. in Media Art from the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong. Lin has had teaching appointments at City University of Hong Kong, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and served as an Associate Professor at Tokyo Christian Woman’s University. Lin is currently Assistant Professor in Media for Social Change, Department of Media Arts and Culture at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA.
Susie Ferrell, Associate Curator, LACMA
Susanna Ferrell is the Wynn Resorts Associate Curator of Chinese Art at LACMA. She joined the museum in 2016 as a specialist in contemporary Chinese art, and has since overseen the acquisition and curation of works from major collections including the Yuz Foundation Collection and the Fondation INK Collection. Her curatorial projects include Line, Form, Qi: Calligraphic Art from the Fondation INK Collection (2025) and Ink Dreams: Selections from the Fondation INK Collection, both highlighting works from this monumental gift of over 400 works of contemporary Chinese and global ink art; Zheng Chongbin: Golden State (2025), Legacies of Exchange: Chinese Contemporary Art from the Yuz Foundation (2021), The Abode of Illusions: The Garden of Zhang Daqian (2020), and The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China (2019) in addition to installations of works by Zeng Fanzhi, Zhu Jinshi, and Andrew Thomas Huang. She has contributed to scholarly publications within and outside of LACMA, including catalogues for The Allure of Matter, Liu Kuo-Sung: Experimentation as Method (National Gallery of Singapore, 2024), Line, Form, Qi, and Zheng Chongbin: Golden State, and is the author and editor of Ink Dreams. Ferrell holds an MA in the History of Fine Art from The Courtauld Institute with a focus on contemporary Chinese art, and a BA in Art History and Fine Art from Scripps College.
Leone Contini
Leone Contini is an artist and researcher based in Italy.
His work moves between art and ethnography, focusing on interspecies relations at the crossroads of the domesticated, the wild, and the feral, where human and more-than-human agencies unsettle ecological and socio-cultural boundaries, opening up spaces of friction as well as coexistence.
Working across lecture-performances, installations, and textual and visual narratives, his practice reflects on how knowledge is produced and negotiated across disciplines, including scientific and juridical frameworks. His research often develops through long-term, situated processes.
His work has been presented at international venues such, among the others, Färgfabriken, Stockholm; Pearl Art Museum, Shanghai; Kunstverein, Solothurn; Maxxi, Rome; Manifesta 12, Palermo; SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin; IAC, Lyon; Delfina Foundation, London; Kunstraum, Munich; Khoj, New Delhi; Kunstraum, Munich; Kunstverein, Amsterdam.
He is currently a practice-based PhD candidate at NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan.
KYOKO TAKENAKA (竹中響子)
Kyoko Takenaka is an anti-disciplinary visual and performance artist with over ten years of experience in butoh dance, film and media arts.
As a collaborative curator, producer, choreographer and performer, their work has been performed at LACMA, Lincoln Center, Huntington Gardens; exhibited through Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, the Autograph ABP; featured on Criterion Collection, the LA Times, BOMB Magazine, Apple TV, Hulu, Nowness, HBO, and Far-Near.
As a musician and composer, Kyoko has developed musical scores and helmed several music projects including the release of their ambient jazz record on In Sheep’s Clothing.
