FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Su Xiaobai Foundation and USC Roski School of Art and Design Launch The Su Xiaobai Curatorial Residency

Jenny Lin, PhD

Los Angeles, CA — The Su Xiaobai Foundation (SXF), a newly established U.S. nonprofit organization headquartered in Los Angeles, has announced a new partnership with the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Art and Design to support a Curatorial residency in Shanghai.

This new residency program reflects SXF’s mission to support artists and scholars through exhibitions, research and international dialogue. Through the residency, SXF will offer comprehensive support to selected participants, including travel, housing, and a living stipend, enabling an extended period of research. Applicants are required to submit a written proposal outlining their project and the anticipated outcomes of the residency. Final residency awards are determined by the SXF Board of Directors following nomination by USC Roski, with funding levels tailored to the specific scope and needs of each approved project.

Scott Stover, Executive Director of the Su Xiaobai Foundation, says “The Foundation is proud to be working with the USC Roski School of Art and Design and Dean Haven Lin-Kirk to launch the first of our Curatorial Residencies. We look forward to a long collaboration with the School and to supporting new research which will further scholarship and cross-cultural dialogue.”

SXF and USC Roski are pleased to announce Jenny Lin, PhD, Associate Professor of Critical Studies and Director of the MA Program in Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere at USC Roski School of Art and Design, as the inaugural Curatorial Resident.

During the residency, Dr. Lin will complete research for a forthcoming book, which she started last year as a Rome Prize Fellow, and begin preliminary research for a subsequent book and exhibition project. Her work examines global networks of contemporary art and design with a focus on cultural exchange across China, Italy, and the United States.

“I’m delighted to be the inaugural Resident and plan to utilize the Su Xiaobai Foundation Curatorial Residency to advance my work, drafting exhibition proposals, furthering my research and engaging with representatives from major institutions such as the Rockbund Art Museum, Yuz Museum, LACMA, the V&A Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Academy in Rome,” said Lin.

Dr. Lin’s current project, Global Art/Fashion Networks: New Silk Roads Connecting China, Italy, and the United States, builds on her previous scholarship and curatorial practice. The project explores collaborations between Chinese artists and Italian luxury brands, contemporary interpretations of Silk Road imaginaries, and the cultural narratives embedded in “Made in Italy” fashion produced by Chinese immigrant communities.

In addition to completing the manuscript, Dr. Lin will undertake field research in Shanghai and across Europe in 2026, conducting interviews, archival research, and site visits to studios, museums, and cultural institutions. This work will inform both future exhibitions and a new book project, Crafting Contemporary Eurasian Art, which examines artists working across Asian and European craft traditions.

About the Su Xiaobai Foundation

Su Xiaobai Foundation was founded in 2024 to preserve, promote and interpret Su Xiaobai’s art and archives, and to support initiatives with a focus on his vision and craft. The Foundation seeks to support artists and scholars who share Su Xiaobai’s commitment to reviving traditional materials and techniques in the production of contemporary art, through exhibitions, research and international dialogue.

This May the Foundation, in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), will present Su Xiaobai’s Alchemical Universe, an exhibition of paintings by the artist, organized as an official Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (2026). Curated by Stephen Little, Curator of Chinese Art and Head of the Chinese, Korean, and South and Southeast Asian Art Departments at LACMA, and designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast (WHY Architecture), the exhibition will offer an unprecedented survey of Su Xiaobai’s practice.
